Design District Fundraising Event

Dine & Design — Summer barbeque to benefit Victoria Hospice.

Saturday, August 21st from Noon til 6pm.

Witness the transformation of the Design District on this day of summer celebration.
Bring the entire family down to Herald Street and enjoy the cool notes of the Preston
McCool band on stage. Make sure you come hungry! Victoria Police officers will be
flipping burgers and hot dogs at Capital Iron’s outdoor barbeque, Swan’s will be offering
home-brewed root beer and hotdogs and there will be an assortment of other tasty treats
courtesy of Hotel Rialto and the Canoe Club. ALL net proceeds will be donated to
Victoria Hospice. The festivities will continue with ‘by donation’ canoe, kayak and
Harbour Ferry rides for the family courtesy of Ocean River Sports and Barry Hobbis of
Harbour Ferries. Head on down to Market Square to purchase a $5 mystery box
containing gift certificates and wares from various merchants. And, don’t forget the instore
specials throughout the Design District and a grand prize Design District shopping
spree. Just pick up your Design District Passport, get 3 stamps and you’ll be entered into
the draw to win!

It will be great fun for the entire family and best of all, the entire day is ‘designed’ to
benefit the Victoria Hospice.

Charity Intellegence Award of Recognition

Charity Intelligence (Ci) Canada has chosen Victoria Hospice Society as a Ci Recommended Charity for the second year in a row.

Ci Canada researches and analyses Canadian charities to help funders make intelligent giving decisions that reward charities for their results.
“We evaluate charities using investment methods that include a charity's defining characteristics,” says Kate Bahen CFA and managing director. “Our research starts with the financial statements and then adds in the value of donated goods and services. Our analysis considers transparency and accountability as a base point, measures efficiency in the prior use of funding, and then goes beyond to quantify effectiveness in meeting their clients' needs.”

Ci Canada recommended Victoria Hospice for three reasons:

  • Victoria Hospice has one of the highest proportions of palliative care patients who have died in their place of choice – either at home or on the Victoria Hospice palliative care unit;
  • Victoria Hospice’s high quality of end-of-life care is substantially less costly than palliative care provided by a number of other programs across the country and saves millions of dollars in health care costs;
  • Victoria Hospice is different to other hospices because of the breadth of programs it offers - including education and research, its partnerships and the ongoing financial support it receives from the Vancouver Island Health Authority and the community.

In 2009, Ci Canada recommended a total of 32 charities from a pool of 435 that were contacted.
