SUMMARY:“Speaking Grief” film screening & discussion
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! \nVictoria Hospice Movie Night for Grievers \nJoin Victoria Hospice Bereavement Services for a screening of the award-winning documentary Speaking Grief to explore the transformative experience of losing a family member in a death- and grief-avoidant society. \nThis film seeks to normalize grief through candid interviews and help people become more comfortable with the many faces\, forms\, and personal experiences of grief. By sharing diverse representations of bereavement experiences\, this documentary illustrates that grief is a universal\, yet individual experience and moves away from the idea that grief is a problem that needs to be “fixed.” It offers validation for the diverse experiences of grievers and guides those wishing to support them. \nWe will view the documentary in the first hour\, with coffee\, tea\, water and popcorn provided. Following the film\, Victoria Hospice bereavement counsellors Heidi Wigmore and Marney Thompson will facilitate a discussion with the audience about grief and how it is presented in the film. \nSeats are limited and you must purchase tickets in advance on Eventbrite – ticket price is $5. Please note in registering for a ticket on Eventbrite\, you are securing one of the limited tickets for this event; please do not register unless you feel committed in your ability to attend. Should you register and need to cancel\, please inform us at 250-519-3040. \nRegister and buy tickets here. \nNOTE: This focus of this evening will be socializing\, light discussion\, and learning. This is not a support or therapy group. Although we encourage participants to prepare for feelings of their grief in watching this film\, there will not be an opportunity for participants to deeply process\, express and share personal grief\, so we encourage you to be mindful of your needs in attending this movie night.

SUMMARY:2023 Facilities Maintenance and Operations Golf Tournament
DESCRIPTION:Get ready\, golfers! It’s time for the highly anticipated 2023 Facilities Maintenance and Operations Golf Tournament for Victoria Hospice. For event organizer and Electrical Maintenance Supervisor Martin Schicchi\, this tournament is special. \nEight years ago\, Martin’s mother-in-law\, Dorothy Beggs\, experienced a life-limiting illness. As her care became overwhelming\, Martin and his wife turned to hospice for help. The compassionate staff swiftly arranged for Dorothy to receive exceptional care on the Inpatient Unit\, which left a lasting impression on Martin. \nSince then\, Martin has dedicated his fundraising efforts to this worthy cause. Martin has set an ambitious goal to surpass last year’s $4\,000 donation and needs support from the community to make it happen. \nThis year’s tournament takes place Saturday\, August 12 at Highland Pacific Golf Course\, with capacity for 80 enthusiastic golfers. Despite rising costs\, Martin is determined to keep the fees affordable for the hospital staff\, who make up the majority of participants. The event will also include a raffle and silent auction with donated items. \nJoin Martin and fellow golfers for a day of giving back and making a real difference. The 2023 FMO Tournament for Victoria Hospice promises friendly competition and a chance to support a cause that touches many lives. \nDonate below to support this wonderful event! \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Mountain Golf Tournament
DESCRIPTION:A close-knit group of family and friends will hit the links again this year July 7 to 9 to celebrate the 30th annual “Mountain Golf Tour. The tour has grown from twelve to 70 participants and now takes place on the Olympic View\, Cordova Bay and Bear Mountain courses. \nPaul Sekhon was a founding member\, beloved family member and friend who died in 2011. The care Paul received on the Inpatient Unit and at home with support from the Palliative Response Team served as inspiration to Paul’s friends and family to do what they could to ensure that compassionate care is available to others. \n“In the final weeks of Dad’s life\, using the hospice services at home – what an opportunity that was to have four weeks in our home having everyone come in and visit – many people don’t get to have that\,” says Paul’s son\, Javas. “That month was really special\, and that was something hospice was able to help provide.” \nThe tournament also honours the memory of Raman Jhuti\, a Mountain Golf Tournament team member and cherished friend\, who died in 2020. \nThe friends of Paul and Raman aim to raise $25\,000 this year. To date their efforts have resulted in over $132\,000 being raised for Hospice. \nYou can support their fundraising goal by donating here\, or by contacting us for more info.

SUMMARY:(CANCELLED) Celebrating Mothers whether “Passed” or Present
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. \nMother’s Day is often a cheerful and celebratory holiday\, but for those who have lost their mom\, this day can be challenging. This event creates a space where people can come together to honour mothers\, grieve\, reflect and share resources. The event is free and open to the public. \nContributing authors of My Mother’s Story: Gone Too Soon will provide a presentation and reading followed by an opportunity for people to discuss and mingle. \nAbout the book: Gone Too Soon is a courageous collection by adults who experienced the loss of their mother in childhood or adolescence. It offers the rich\, lived experiences of mothers and bereaved children in Canada\, the USA\, the UK\, and South Korea. Even though their paths are unique\, the anthology contributors traverse difficult emotional terrain together to more definitively answer the question “Who was my mother?” Collectively they transform the narrative from feeling a mother’s absence to finding her presence. Learn more about My Mother’s Story: Gone Too Soon. \nCopies of My Mother’s Story: Gone Too Soon will be available for sale\, and other free resources available at this event. \nContact Community Education and Projects Lead Marta Lefsrud for more information. \nPlease RSVP on EventBrite.
