"Like life, long journeys can be challenging and full of unexpected difficulties. But through a positive attitude, support from friendly people, and a consistent effort, these hurdles can be overcome". – Kane Mercer
In mid-May 2017, Kane Mercer kicked off a cross-Canada cycling tour called Ride for Rand, in memory of his father, Randy Mercer, who passed away five years ago at Victoria Hospice.
“I want to raise awareness and funds for Victoria Hospice,” says Kane. “…for the kind staff who helped my father and my family, for the work that Hospice does on a daily basis to relieve the suffering of others.”
Randy was diagnosed with terminal cancer in December 2011. Kane had just moved to Japan and his father insisted that quitting his new job and moving home was out of the question. Randy wanted Kane to follow his dream of living, working and cycling across parts of Japan and Korea. Kane managed a short trip home after Randy died, but followed his father's advice and fulfilled his dream of working, living and cycling overseas from 2012 – 2015.
Now, in honor of the fifth year since his passing, Kane is keeping the memory of his father alive with this epic cycling tour across Canada. There is no set schedule and he is expected to return by September; we will keep you posted and encourage you to learn more and donate at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/ride-for-rand/. All proceeds go directly to Victoria Hospice.
