Victoria Hospice Compass Program

Compassionate connections for caregivers of people with life-limiting illnesses

Victoria Hospice is excited to launch a pilot for the Compass program beginning September 20, 2022. We will be offering this programs for up to 16 caregiving clients in the greater Victoria Area. We anticipate expanding the program in February 2023.

Caring for someone with a life-limiting illness can be deeply fulfilling. It can be one of the highest expressions of love one can offer. It can also be demanding and isolating in many ways.

As a caregiver, you may wish to do everything you can to support your relative, member of your chosen family, or friend to live as well as they can, and experience a “good death” in the place of their choice. Sometimes the supports available to you may be hard to find, or hard to navigate. Your caregiving responsibilities may leave you short on the energy needed for your own self-care and well-being.

We’re here to support you, the caregiver, in your crucial role. You may need support with the following:

  • finding the right people to help you help your family member
  • feeling equipped to handle changes in their condition
  • knowing what to expect in the future
  • finding time for your own needs
  • looking after your own well-being
  • coping with worries

How we can help

The Victoria Hospice Compass Program provides compassionate connections to services and support for caregivers of people with life-limiting illnesses.

The program is designed to help you navigate key services for the person you care for. And it provides you, the caregiver, with one-to-one support for your own needs and well-being.

We’ll match you with a trained and dedicated volunteer who will stand beside you throughout your caregiving journey. Your Compass Program Liaison Volunteer will

  • help you navigate the palliative care system
  • help you mobilize practical support
  • be there to reassure and encourage you
  • support your well-being and self-care

Getting started

The Victoria Hospice Compass Program serves caregivers of patients registered with Victoria Hospice. If your family member is not yet registered, we can support you to take that step.

Once registered with Victoria Hospice, we will provide you with more information about the Compass Program and set up a time for a home visit, virtual visit, or phone call.
