Why Victoria Hospice has a place in my heart and my Will

A story of grief, gratitude, and giving back, as told by Heritage Circle member, Susan McMillan

Susan McMillan shares her story

Some moments in life stay with us forever, shaping who we are and the choices we make.

For me, it was experiencing Victoria Hospice’s extraordinary care—first with my father and later with my husband, David, during their end-of-life journeys.

That’s why I decided to include Victoria Hospice in my Will. I wanted to ensure that families in our community will receive the same compassionate care when they need it most.

My journey with Victoria Hospice began when my father needed end-of-life care.

I still remember how the Hospice staff treated my father with exceptional kindness while also supporting my mother, who was beginning to show signs of cognitive decline.

The whole process was gentle. I can’t tell you how grateful I am that my father passed away surrounded by family in a such a comfortable environment.

Years later, when my husband, David, developed liver cancer that spread to his bones, we turned to Victoria Hospice again.

What impressed me most wasn’t just the medical excellence, but the profound compassion shown by every staff member and volunteer. The doctors would sit and talk with me for as long as I needed without checking their watches. And the nurses found deep fulfillment in making someone’s last days better while supporting their loved ones through one of life’s most challenging transitions. Volunteers were a constant presence and comfort to us.

After David passed, I joined the Hospice walking group, where I found space to grieve without judgment. It was truly a safe space where I could show up as my authentic self.

This experience made me realize just how important it is to support Victoria Hospice with a gift in my Will. I wanted to ensure that our community continues to have this unwavering support and essential service that simply doesn’t exist elsewhere in our general hospital system.

As my late husband David would have said, it’s “value for dollars spent.”

I know, at first, these types of gifts could seem like something that’s only for the very wealthy. But that’s not the case. After all, every contributionno matter the sizecombines with others to create an extraordinary impact.

By including Victoria Hospice in your Will, you’re ensuring that the compassionate care that has touched so many lives—perhaps even yours—continues for generations to come.

Your legacy becomes one of kindness, dignity, and support for your community.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Susan McMillan
