Community fundraiser Emily Craveiro: giving back

Emily Craveiro was shocked when her father, Joe, was diagnosed with cancer and his illness progressed quickly. “When you hear ‘hospice’ it can be daunting, because that means it’s real,” Emily says. “But they made that terrible time in my life as seamless as it could be.”

Joe received palliative care at home, and both Emily and her mom received support from Victoria Hospice Bereavement counsellors.

”The counsellor validated my experience as normal and gave me some tools to get through the hard days. Having someone to talk to is such a good thing,” she says.

“When you lose a parent when you’re young – you don’t expect it. Healing is not a quick thing, and there may be a bit of a stigma with young people around counselling or going to a grief support group. But being with people who have gone through the same experience is so important.

When Emily saw an opportunity to support Victoria Hospice, she jumped on it. A member of the Browns Socialhouse Uptown team, she pitched the idea of a fundraiser for hospice and the crew rallied right away.

“Victoria Hospice helped me and my family so much and I love to give back however I can,” she says.

Browns Socialhouse Uptown brought neighbouring businesses together to create a prize pack of products and gift cards. Last year they raised more than $2,300 for Victoria Hospice. You can help Emily and Brown’s top that total this year!

“Victoria Hospice was such a saving grace for my family. They helped us prepare and maneuver through the loss of my beloved father. They were so kind, knowledgeable and respectful throughout the whole process, it wouldn’t have been the same without them by our sides,” Emily says. “I am hopeful we are able to raise more and more every year to support this amazing foundation that supports so many people daily.”
