Victoria Hospice nurses invite you to join them in a circle of support around patients and families at Hike for Hospice May 1.

Their fundraising team, Victoria Hospice Nurses with Heart and Soul, is open to everyone. You can become a team member and walk with the nurses who provide care and compassion to people who are dying and their families every day.

Nurses know first-hand how big a difference community-raised funds make on the Inpatient Unit.

“Financial support for hospice helps nurses spend quality time with patients and families,” said Adrienne Rogers, LPN, who has been with Victoria Hospice since 1999. “Our education program, volunteer program, and funds for patient comfort measures all support us to do our jobs well.”

“Our work at hospice isn’t only on the medical side, it’s psychosocial, spending time with people, listening to the stories of the patient and families – that’s our total patient approach,” she said.

The specialized palliative care and compassion nurses provide means so much to Victoria Hospice patients and families.

“Dad was able to relax and let his care be taken over by excellent nurses who made him feel comfortable, special, and well-loved. They also reassured his family when we had worries and anxiety,” said one of many grateful family members.

Connecting with families at Hike for Hospice is one of the joys of the event, said Teresa McFadyen, LPN.

“Families we have come to know on the unit will often join us at Hike for Hospice and share how they’re doing. It’s so beneficial for both the families and the staff to come back together,” she said.

“It’s such a fun event that helps people connect with each other. There’s laughter, there are tears too, and lots of smiles for the four-legged furbabies people bring to the event. Hike for Hospice is a highlight in what could have been a low part in someone’s journey.”

Whatever way you choose to get involved in Hike for Hospice, you’ll support patients and families, and hospice nurses too. You can walk as a single participant, start your own team or workplace challenge, or hike on your own site. If you’d like to join the Victoria Hospice Nurses with Heart and Soul, the funds you raise will contribute to their team total – and team spirit!
