A special appeal from Victoria Hospice Society CEO Teri Henderson

When asked what has been most important to them during their experience at Victoria Hospice, a patient recently shared, “The care team. They are truly amazing.”
As CEO, I couldn’t agree more. Every day, I witness the extraordinary dedication of our skilled professionals who go above and beyond to provide exceptional, compassionate care.
But I need to be honest with you: I’m deeply concerned. Our healthcare system is facing a crisis, and Victoria Hospice’s level of care is at risk. That’s why I’m reaching out today — because you can make a difference.
Staffing shortages, an aging population, and increased demand for services are causing our care team to work extremely hard in demanding situations. The more worn out they become, the less capacity they have to serve patients and families.
To make matters worse, government funding covers only 45% of our operating budget. That leaves a critical gap — one that caring donors like you help to fill.
You and I both know that people who are dying and their loves ones deserve the very best care. But without enough staff, that care is compromised.

Our nurses, physicians, care aids, counsellors, music therapists, spiritual health practitioners, and volunteers are our most valuable assets. Their emotional and physical well-being directly impact the quality of care that loved ones receive.
With government funding only going so far, it’s donors like you that bridge the critical gap.
Your gift today will help fund vital frontline positions and supports — so that no patient is left without the care they need, and no team member is left carrying the weight alone.
One of our most urgent needs is building capacity within our nursing team at night.
Picture this: a family looking after their loved one at home, and suddenly, in the middle of the night, their loved one’s symptoms worsen. Fear and uncertainty set in. But then, they make a call to our Unit.
Within moments, they receive expert guidance from a nurse — and if needed, our Palliative Response Team is dispatched to provide in-home care.
Families tell us time and time again: that single call in the night can change everything. It turns panic into peace, fear into relief.
Without you, this level of care is at risk.
Not only do our patients need your help, but our care teams do too.
Because at the heart of hospice is our people. It’s their compassion, skill, and well-being that create moments of comfort and connection when they’re needed most.

Your generosity today ensures families are never left to navigate this journey alone. You’ll provide the comfort of a reassuring voice at 2 a.m., the relief of knowing help is on the way, and the peace of mind that comes from compassionate, expert care.
Hospice care is about so much more than medicine; it’s about dignity, comfort, and love. It’s about making sure no one spends their final days alone or in unnecessary pain and distress. With your help, this important work will continue—today, tomorrow, and for years to come.
Will you send a gift to strengthen our team and safeguard the care they provide?
Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and your belief in Victoria Hospice.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Teri Henderson
